Plain Language Summary

# Summary of the Deporting Fraudsters Act of 2026 **What the bill would do:** This bill would make public benefits fraud a deportable offense for non-U.S. citizens. If passed, individuals convicted of—or who admit to—committing fraud involving programs like food stamps (SNAP), Social Security, other federally-funded assistance programs, or creating fake IDs could be barred from entering the U.S. or deported if already present.

The bill would also prevent these individuals from receiving certain immigration protections, even if they face torture or persecution in their home country. **Who it affects:** The bill targets non-citizens (immigrants, visa holders, and undocumented individuals) who commit or are convicted of specific types of fraud. It could also indirectly affect U.S. citizens and legal residents by potentially increasing scrutiny of benefit applications and enforcement. **Current status:** HR 1958 was introduced in the 119th Congress by Representative David Taylor (R-OH) and is currently in committee, meaning it has not yet been debated or voted on by the full House. The bill has not advanced beyond this initial stage.
